Dealing With A Dream Hangover.
Aug 05, 2025
This morning I woke up already feeling off. I'd had a very lucid, vivid dream that felt so real. I felt the hugs and the sadness, I felt the unknowing. You know the kind of dream that leaves a strange residue behind — an uncertainty about the future, about the present, about yourself. Not helped at all by the stress hormones released during this dream!
That was me today.
There was such a heaviness in my chest before my feet even hit the floor. I felt sad, I felt there was some foreboding of imminent loss, and I definitely relieved some grief around past losses. It was a lot!
And while part of me wanted to get up, make a cup of tea and push past it —another part of me wanted to stay in bed.
But I did get up, hoping I would shake it once I had “woken up” properly. That didn’t happen, so I let myself feel the feelings I was feeling. Tears rolled down my cheeks, I sobbed when I tried to explain the dream to my husband. Have you ever noticed how your explanation of a dream never sounds as raw, as real and disturbing as it did while you were experiencing it?
Still the low mood did not pass. I tried to distract myself with chores and ticking off some of my to-do list, expecting to just suddenly feel better. I didn’t. I superficially tried to interpret my dream. I could have googled “dreams and their meaning” but I know this type of generalisation would not be helpful for me.
So I did what I so often guide others to do:
I paused. I listened and I coached myself through it with self-compassion and curiosity.
What was my subconscious trying to tell me? I had obviously been ignoring it for a while for the dream to come through with so much intensity. The steps were simple and the interpretation was clear.
And here’s the thing — by the time I’d moved through it, I didn’t just feel lighter.
I felt inspired.
A small flicker of clarity sparked through the fog. Not because I tried to fix anything.
But because I made space to listen. I went from grief and despair to self-belief and hope, knowing all is well and will be well within 15 minutes! I listened and my dream had meaning. Not the meaning I assumed it had upon waking this morning, but real vision and guidance for my future!
That’s the power of coaching.
Sometimes it’s not the planned sessions or the “big breakthroughs.”
Sometimes, it’s the quiet ones — the self-led check-ins, the moments of insight when you least expect it. A great coaching program gives you tools to coach yourself too!
If you’ve been feeling disconnected, discouraged, or just not quite you lately —
I want to remind you: even your most unsettled mornings can become moments of transformation.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
