Can you change your mind with substituting one word for another? Yes you can. Your internal dialogue is very powerful and you listen to it all day. You don’t even get anyone else’s opinion or perspective on that until you verbalise it. Sometimes we do verbalise them often too, often in a complaining manner, which has a ripple effect on others. How easy can it be to change that?
If you pay attention to the thoughts going on in your mind, you may find a pattern to how you approach your everyday tasks. It may be something like, “This morning I have to get ready, I have to make school lunches and snacks, I have to do more washing, I have to clean the house, I have to go to work, I have to do the shopping, I have to have people over to catch up … “. Does this sound familiar to you?
What if you were to substitute the word “have” with “get”? It now becomes: “This morning I get to get ready, I get to make school lunches and snacks, I get to do more washing, I get to clean the house, I get to go to work, I get to do the shopping, I get to have people over to catch up …”
The underlying feeling for me for replacing “have to” with “get to”, is one of opportunity and gratitude, compared to a feeling of obligation and weariness. “Get” implies you have opportunity which invokes gratitude, because it means you are going to receive or earn something. For example: “I get to clean the house.” is a statement that invokes a lot of gratitude for me and it goes much deeper than spending my time cleaning; I am grateful to have a house to clean, I am grateful to be physically able to clean it, I am grateful to have running water and electricity to help me with cleaning. Similarly, “I get to take my son to school.” enhances the appreciation I have to spend time with him one on one, I am grateful he talks to me about his future aspirations, I am grateful to have a car and I am grateful that he goes to a great school, … you get the idea!
Why not try this for yourself for a week and see how your attitude shifts. The gratitude will be uplifting and you will become more aware of the opportunities that present themselves to you all throughout your day.
